Philippines, officially the Republic of Philippines, with Manila as the capital, is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. Situated in the western Pacific Ocean, it consists of about 7,641 islands that are mainly categorized under three main geographical divisions. The Philippines is considered to be an emerging market and a newly industrialized country.

Philippines has a tropical maritime climate that is usually hot and humid. It is the 5th largest island country in the world with being the 5th longest coastline in the world. The country’s rich biodiversity is one the main tourist attractions with its beaches, mountains, rainforest, islands and diving destination.

Philippines has pursued efforts to improve the field of science and technology. The Commission on Higher Education lists 2,180 higher education institutions, 607 of which are public and 1,573 private. In 2001 there were about 1,700 hospitals, of which about 40% were government run and 60% private.

Philippines medial schools are graduate schools offering the Doctor of Medicine (M.D) degree. M.D is a four-year professional degree program which qualifies the degree holder to take the licensure exam for medical doctors in Philippines.
