KHARKIV AVIATION INSTITUTE (KhAI)

Ukraine is one of the few countries where aviation and space engineering is developed and manufactured and where skilled experts are trained for these areas. Kharkiv Aviation Institute, KhAI University specialized in aviation and space engineering was founded in 1930. Its history is closely connected with the development of aircraft engineering and science in the Soviet Union. The university is famous for its creation of the first in Europe high-speed airplane with a retractable landing gear and the creation of the design of the turbojet engine developed by teacher of the KhAI A. M. Liulka who afterwards became the academician and designer of many structures of aircraft engines including the engine of the aircraft Su-27.

The KhAI is a unique higher educational institution where the airplanes developed by the Institute Design Bureau under the supervision of professor I. G. Neman were produced serially at the aircraft plants and run on passenger airlines.

From 1977 to 1984 the Designer General O.K. Antonov ran the department of airplane structure at the KhAI.

In 1978 the KhAI was given the name of N. Ye. Zhukovskiy. In 1980 the institute was awarded with the order of Lenin. In 1998 the N. Ye. Zhukovskiy State Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” was founded on the basis of the KhAI and in 2000 the University got a status of the National higher education institution and was renamed the National Aerospace University ″Kharkiv Aviation Institute″. It has graduated more than 80 thousand engineers.

ACCREDITATION AND RECOGANIZATIONS

KhAI has been an active member of the International Association of Universities IAU/UNESCO since 2003. IAU/UNESCO brings together universities and organizations from 150 countries. Being a member of this organization, the university receives complete information about educational systems and institutions of the international community as well as programs, grants and events of IAU/UNESCO.

In 2009 KhAI joined the European Aeronautics Science Network (EASN) owing to its well-known scientific and technological development. The main goal of the EASN organization is to develop aeronautics as a science. EASN supports its members in organizing joint projects and student exchange programs.

KhAI is the only university in Ukraine, which became an associate partner in the Partnership for European aviation universities PEGASUS in 2010. Membership in the PEGASUS organization gives participants the opportunity to introduce innovation and exchange programs between universities in different countries as well as aerospace industrial enterprises and relevant government agencies. It leads to the “Europeanization” of employment opportunities for graduates.

In 2010 KhAI signed Magna Charta Universitatum during the 22th anniversary conference of the Association of European Universities in Bologna, Italy which enables academic freedom of students, freedom of scientific research, indivisibility of study and research.

In 2011 KhAI joined International Association of technical universities of the CIS countries to improve vocational training, quality of science and engineering education.
